Controlled Combat takes divisions and brackets very seriously. A bad match up does not help any individual competitor. Our organization will do everything we can to ensure a fair and equitable matchup.

  • There will be a table available prior to matchups to answer any questions and discuss the movement of a competitor to another division

  • If possible, divisions will be split by singular age group with our 4-17 competitors. (4 vs. 4, 8 vs. 8, 13 vs. 13, etc.)

  • Jiu Jitsu Belt ranks are taken very seriously and there will not be movement from a higher rank to lower rank division unless approved by lower belt rank competitors (or parents/coaches), matchups may occur with mixed belt ranks at the discretion of Controlled Combat

  • Competitors may compete in different age groups with concurrence and approval by Controlled Combat

  • Competitors that have participated in Collegiate wrestling and/or professional competition may not compete as a white belt unless discussed with Controlled Combat prior to the event

Age Groups (Return to Top of Page)

Age groups will be mixed but Controlled Combat will do their best to keep ages within two years. (Ex. A 7-year-old competitor may go against a 9-year-old)

Experience (Return to Top of Page)

Experience will be based on Jiu Jitsu Belt Ranks, competition experience, and years of training:

  • No submission matches are available

  • Exhibition Matches are available for all levels of competitor, please be sure to mark this on your event registration for proper matchups. An Exhibition Match will require the registration fee however, these matches will NOT go against your official record.

    • Ex. 1) A 6-year-old training for 6 months may compete in exhibition vs another competitor to gain exposure to the competition circuit in a less stressful environment. Referees may take time to assist and help coach the competitors while in an official match, this is not the case.

    • Ex. 2) An adult white belt may be in their first tournament and would prefer their first tournament to be exhibition and not have a loss (or win) on their record. This exhibition match could assist them in deciding on whether they want to compete in future tournaments.

    • Ex. 3) An adult black belt may want to have an exhibition match against another competitor to showcase their skillset while not having it count against their official record.

Weight (Return to Top of Page)

Controlled Combat utilizes the "Madison Weight System". This is a popular tournament format, as seen in many wrestling tournaments, where there are no weight classes for registration and Controlled Combat pairs competitors into brackets. The reason for this is to discourage weight cutting, especially in youth athletes. NOTE: Controlled Combat will ask for experience (belt), age, and weight and pair up competitors into fair and equitable brackets (Ex. a 7-year-old grey belt weighing 60 lbs. will be competing against similar age, belt, and weight. They will NOT be matched up against a 10-year-old yellow belt weighing 80 lbs.). Our goal is to have an enjoyable, professional, and safe environment for all competitors. Please be mindful of what you/your competitor will weigh the day of competition. Brackets will be published based on this entered weight but WILL be moved if the weight is different.

NOTE: There are NO weight allowances

Tournament Style (Return to Top of Page)

Most events will be held in a Round Robin Style tournament to maximize the number of matches per competitor in one day. This will be a maximum of 4 matches and a + 1 for Gold/Silver or Bronze for a total of 10 matches if you have 5 total competitors in your division and registered for Gi and No Gi. There will be Superfights available for all ages, please inquire through Contact Us.
