Controlled Combat follows its own set of rules. Please review prior to competition for familiarization.
Starting of Match (Return to Top of Page)
Competitors must start standing across from one another in a neutral position and wait for direction from the referee to begin
Match Length (Return to Top of Page)
4 years old: 2 minutes
5-12 years old: 3 minutes
13-17 years old: 4 minutes
18+: 5 minutes
A sudden victory (first point wins) overtime may be provided, at the referee’s discretion, with a limit of three minutes. If the Overtime does not declare a winner the referee will decide on the winner. (Overtime periods start in a standing neutral position)

All points must be scored within the boundary line of the mat (See table at the bottom of the page for points)

All points are at the discretion of the referee

If a match ends in a score tie then the referee will make a decision on the winner

In some cases, such as a Superfight, an overtime may be provided with a limit of three minutes. If the Overtime does not declare a winner there will be a one minute second overtime period that is sudden victory awarded to the competitor that scores first. (Overtime periods start in a standing neutral position)

Youth

All submissions below the waist and slams (not to be confused with a takedown, which is controlled) are illegal
-
Most submissions above the waist are legal (Ezequiel in Gi is Legal (Collar) , in No Gi is Illegal)

Pulling of the head on a triangle is illegal
-
Guillotines standing and grounded are illegal
-
Flying submissions are illegal
Adult
-
Most submissions are legal, including submissions below the waist
-
Twisting leg locks are illegal in Adult White or Blue Belt divisions

Submissions outside of typical ruleset, I.E., twisting leg locks, to be discussed with Head Ref and Director of the tournament prior to the bracket beginning.

Slams are illegal (not to be confused with a takedown, which is controlled)
Stoppage (Return to Top of Page)

The referee can stop a match if a competitor is in jeopardy of potentially suffering an injury, regardless of individual flexibility

A competitor wins by submission when an opponent:
-
Physically taps two times on the mat or opponent by foot or hand
-
Verbally taps by request to the referee or makes a sound that sounds as if the competitor is in pain

Crying during a match can be considered a verbal tap at the discretion of the referee
-

Jumping guard pull is not allowed and may result in a stoppage
Medical issues may arise such a vomiting, loss of bowels, cramping, unconsciousness, bleeding, or other that may result in a stoppage. If this occurs the referee may provide the opponent up to three minutes of recovery time. A competitor may compete in other matches as long as there is no health risk. A professional Medic will be provided for all events in case of emergency.
Disqualification (Return to Top of Page)
Disqualifications, respect, ethics, and morals are taken very seriously in Controlled Combat. If a competitor or coach is disqualified, they will not compete in any match the remainder of that tournament!

The referee can stop a match if a coach is not showing respect to his competitor, opponent, referee, or other individuals at the event

Verbal Request by competitor or competitor's coach

Failure to report within two minutes of the reported mat time and/0r within two minutes of one call over the audio system

Unsportsmanlike conduct:
-
Biting
-
Spitting
-
Strikes
-
Eye gouging
-
Intentional Face Grab
-
Hair Pulling
-
Groin Strike
-
Fishhook
-
Small joint/Digit Manipulation
-
Fingers in any Orifice
-
Taunting of any kind
-
Any contact with a Coach, Referee, Parent, Spectator, or Controlled Combat Team member (This is taken very seriously. An individual will be asked to leave the premises if this occurs with no refund. This is zero tolerance and the individual will be banned for one year in the first instance and lifetime if it happens again.)

Rule Infraction:

Slamming of any kind

Clawing, pinching, or twisting of skin
-
Foul language
-
Coach interference
-
Competitor leaves the mat area to avoid their opponent

Conduct with malicious intent (strikes before, during, or after a match; illegal submission attempt)

Hygiene:
-
Hair must have it controlled to not interfere with opponent
-
Finger and Toenails must be trimmed with no sharpness and clean without any dirt/residue underneath
-
Competitors uniforms must be clean (Gi and No Gi)
-
No cuts or lacerations are permitted even when covered
-
No skin infections (ringworm, staph, herpes, chicken pox, etc.)
-
Competitor may not have lotions, oils, or grease on their self
-
Penalties and warning may be given at the discretion of the referee. Coaches are not allowed in the competition area but may be seated or stand by the mat's table for coaching unless approved by the referee. The escalation of the aforementioned infractions/conduct are:

Verbal Warning and one point to the competitor's opponent

Disqualification and removal from the event

At weigh in and prior to a match a Controlled Combat team member will inspect the competitor's uniform.
Not Allowed:
-
Any lotions, oils, grease, and/or hair products that could impact the opponent, mat, referee, or other
-
Jewelry of any kind, including earrings (Taping may be allowed at the discretion of Controlled Combat)
-
Piercings with jewelry embedded that is uncovered (Taping may be allowed at the discretion of Controlled Combat)
-
Dirty, soiled, ripped, or Gi's/No Gi uniforms that do not fit properly will not be allowed to compete
-
Cups
-
Headgear (Unless for medical reasons)
-
Shoes of any kind
-
Hair Pins
-
Hair not secured below the shoulders
-
Apparel with metal, including on grommets
-
Grappling socks that cover the front of back of the foot
Allowed:
-
Mouthpieces, but not required
-
Limb sleeves as long as there is no hard material such as plastic or metal that could impact a submission attempt
-
Mismatching Gi/No Gi uniforms (All colors are permitted as long as there is no vulgar material)
-
Patches as long as they are securely attached
-
Wrestling Singlets in No Gi or under a Gi uniform
-
Fight Shorts, Board Shorts, Spats, or Lycra Shorts
-
Shorts with strings as long as they are secured and tucked in
